Overview
Maras & Moray
Both archaeological sites are unique and fascinating, located high in the Sacred Valley and offer an interesting insight into the agricultural technology and economy of the Inca era.
Maras is an ancient village known for its impressive complex of 1500 shallow posos filled with naturally flowing salt water, built into the side of a mountain with a peculiar hydraulic system. The inhabitants of Maras have exploited the salt mines for centuries and continue to do so today.
In addition, the panoramic views from the top of the circular terraces of Moray and the salt mine of Maras are impressive and unique destinations. Moray is a series of concentric terraces in the shape of an amphitheater, built as an experimental agricultural laboratory where the temperature at each level could be controlled to acclimatize plants from other ecological levels.
