Locally it is known as Vinicunca which means rocky neck. Now a days the new name is due to its impressive coloration, which includes shades of red, green, yellow, lilac and turquoise, creating a spectacular and unique sight in the world.

The coloration of the hill is due to the presence of various minerals in the rocks, such as iron, copper and sulfur, which have oxidized over time. Cerro Arcoíris is located at an altitude of 5,200 m. and its ascent is a challenging experience.
