Salkantay is one of the most popular and spectacular trekking routes in South America, connecting the villages of Mollepata and Machupicchu. The hike is about 56 km / 34.796 mi (depending on the route) through the Vilcabamba mountain range, the name Salkantay is due to the mountain (glacier) of the same name, 6271 m / 20574 ft, which becomes the center of attraction for any hiker, creating ecological diversity from high mountains to subtropical forests. The highest pass is 4200 m / 13779 ft, from where the mountainous environment of the Andes changes to a tropical environment until reaching Machupicchu, making this trek a once in a lifetime experience.
